On the 18th October, a long-haul B-double freighter travelling to Fremantle caught fire. Thankfully, the driver escaped unharmed, and for the most part, so did the two hose reels on board that were destined for one of our clients at the Port of Broome.   The entire truck was engulfed in flames and although the two reels were deemed unsalvageable, they stood firm, a testament to ReCoila’s rigid design and our engineering team’s quality craftsmanship.   The reels were custom designed and manufactured at our Sydney facility for a unique offshore fuelling application. To effectively dispense the large volumes of…

AS1554 welding standard

17, February 2015
An Australian manufacturer supplying heavy duty hose and cable reels to many industries is now standardising the level of welding on its manufactured technologies in a very transparent way.   ReCoila, a reels specialist based in Sydney, has now made it an expectation that welders working in its production plant are trained and accredited to the skills set demanded by Australian Standard AS1554.   AS1554 is a certification that allows welders to perform down hand, vertical up and overhead continuous fillet and butt welds so the end user of its cable and hose reels recognises its product is made to…
Safety barrier reels are perfect for cordoning off areas that are out of bounds for pedestrians, or flagging no-entry areas with a high visibility barrier. ReCoila's BAR Series barrier tape reels are now available fitted with 15 or 20 metres of fluoro pink, yellow or orange webbing. NOW AVAILABLE: FIXING HOOKS FOR BARRIER REELS   A sturdy steel hook and clip set allows you to create a permanent fixing point for your barrier reel. Mount your reel to a wall, attach the hook to the end of the barrier tape, and mount the D plate on an opposite wall to…
Lubrication is the lifeblood of modern industry. More than just a ‘machine additive’, lubricants are  crucial to the safe, reliable, efficient functioning of all machinery.    Without proper and timely lubrication, even our most advanced workhorses of industry would succumb to the frictional stresses of wear, overheating and corrosion.   Machine bearings are particularly susceptible to haphazard lubrication procedures. According to leading industry journal Machinery Lubrication, up to 80 percent of all bearing failures are the result of improper lubrication, with considerable potential to trigger not only catastrophic machine failure, but full assembly-line stoppages.   Indeed, beyond the more obvious…
For a piece of equipment that performs a relatively simple function – deploying and retrieving hose – choosing the right hose reel can sometimes be a deceptively complex job.   Secondary considerations such as the operating environment, operator’s level of expertise, mounting position, hose bend radius and other factors can sometimes be overlooked after initial requirements such as size, length and pressure have been met.   In many cases this doesn’t affect the suitability of the reel to the job, however on occasion something as simple as what the reel is made of can have an effect on performance and…
This article was originally published on Industry Update.   Some manufacturers may be exploiting the term “Australian Made”, an industry leader claims.   Mr Michael Pawson, managing director of ReCoila, a leading hose and cable reel company, says industry needs to learn more about the term Australian-Made. “The importance in supporting Australian-Made can never be understated, yet the term itself may need some closer investigation,” he says.   Mr Pawson says his company, which supplies products locally and overseas, constantly battles fierce competition from imported products, many of which are inferior to locally manufactured items.   “With the overall local…
ReCoila’s range of automation reels are specifically designed to supply hydraulic oil from fixed to moving points on cranes, truck mounted cranes, forklift trucks and other materials handling equipment.   Compact, efficient and reliable, the AG & A4 Series features high quality bearings and components that offer high cycle rates and high life expectancy in the most demanding of applications and environments. Superior design and construction allow these reels to handle the constant repetitive unwind / rewind motions of crane arms or forklift truck lifting mechanisms ensuring reliable operation.   These reels are designed to accommodate 1,2,3,4,5 and 6  hoses,…
“The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.” - Benjamin Franklin   Aussie and Kiwi manufacturers are a pretty hardy bunch.   We’ve weathered plenty of stormy economic times and predictions about the demise of the sector both here and in NZ, but when loopholes are discovered that permit cheap imports to land on our shores, local manufacturers need to band together and support their own.   We all strive for a competitive edge, but there is a difference between those displaying ethical competitiveness and those that gain a head start from evasion…
Designing totally unique, custom made hose reels can be a tricky business. With so many different factors coming into play, rarely can we rely on our own experience alone. We’ve always consulted with customers and other industry experts as part of the quoting and subsequent manufacturing process, but a recent article over at Fast Company got me thinking more deeply about how we approach our design process and the benefits of a design born out of  unbiased individual thought.   The article talked about the loss of uncorrelated wisdom in today’s hyper-connected world. The author wrote about how in our…
Best Practice: Washdown   Although most businesses operating within the meat and food processing industries have strict hygiene procedures in place and washdown procedures are part of everyday operations, often the finer details involved in washdown can be missed.   Washdown hoses are frequently exposed to harsh cleaning chemicals, fats and oils which can shorten the hose’s life span. And if hoses are coiled on a hook or stored on the floor, dirt and debris can also build up on the hose.   Animal fats are notoriously aggressive and can cause hoses to fail before the end of their natural…
With over 30 years experience in designing and manufacturing hose reels and cable reels, ReCoila is well placed to offer custom a design and manufacturing facility for all types of applications.   Can we build it? Yes we can.   We build reels from polypropylene, steel, stainless steel and aluminium to suit all types of industries – mining, offshore oil and gas, petrochemical, marine, food processing, firefighting, pressure washing, electrical, manufacturing, industrial and more.   If you need a hose reel and those in our standard range don’t fit the bill, we can build one from scratch to suit your…
Hoses are common place throughout industry, providing a practical and effective method for conveying or transferring liquids and gases.   External factors found in the working environment can have an adverse effect on the hose considerably reducing its life span – factors such as extreme temperatures, humidity, sunlight, oils, solvents, surfactants, welding spatter, corrosive atmosphere or exposure to aggressive chemicals.   Although industrial hoses are generally considered a consumable item and will need replacing from time to time, properly managing, using and storing hoses will help reduce and in some cases prevent premature failure, and will in most cases increase…
